Guiding futures at RIC
RIC first earned its stellar reputation through outstanding Maths and Science teaching, helping many of our students realise their dreams of becoming doctors, vets, and dentists. We consistently send our graduates to top Russell Group universities and Oxbridge where they study subjects including Physiotherapy. Mathematics, Computer Sciences, Earth Sciences, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and Engineering.
When you study STEM subjects at RIC, you'll join a vibrant community of like-minded peers all aiming for top universities. Our teaching staff includes graduates from prestigious institutions such as Imperial and Cambridge, who bring their own research passions to the classrooms and labs. It's a friendly and academically inspiring environment where your STEM aspirations can truly take flight.
CSI Rochester
Year 12 students spent a day solving a CSI murder mystery around our campus! Students unanimously agreed that they had a great day, full of enjoyment and STEM related problem solving.
In the first year, I created an android app for pulse-rate monitoring using principles of oximetry and basic programming and developed support materials so fellow students can build on the app. In the second year I designed smart shoes which light up in the dark and detect the pacing and applied force to the foot to prevent injury from repetitive stress.
STEM futures
A glance at the university destinations of RIC students reveals a wide range of impressive courses for those intending to pursue mathematical, scientific and engineering careers. This year we were visited by former RIC student Sandra Adele. Doctor or lawyer. While growing up in Nigeria it was taught that she could become one or the other.
“A career in science was not presented to me as an option,” she says. Fast forward and in 2023 47% of STEM graduates in Africa are women and Sandra is currently reading for a DPhil in Clinical Medicine at Oxford and is a member of Christ Church College and the Junior Dean of Exeter College. Her background is in Neuroscience, Pharmacology and Global Health. Sandra also works at the WHO, supporting on the COVID response. Sandra spoke about her journey to Oxford and gave advice about the application process and college selection. She also shared memories of some happy times being taught in the RIC Maths shed!
What helped me most was the more relaxed relationship with teachers and lots of individual attention, giving me a more rounded understanding of my subjects. That five minute informal chat after lessons really helps. My study skills improved exponentially; my time management got better and I realised the importance of dedication and taking responsibility for myself and my own learning.
Destinations 2024
Maths and Sciences are amongst the College's strongest subjects and our UK and international students consistently win places at Russell Group universities, including the G5.
Offers this year include Data Science @universityofbristol, Psychology @officialuom, Medicine @cambridgeuniversity, Chemistry @ucl, Computer Science @edinburghuniversity, Mechanical Engineering @uniofnottingham, Biomedical Sciences @kings_college_london and Physics @imperialcollege.
Sustainable STEM
As part of the College’s Sustainable Careers Month our Year 12 students attended a sustainable technology event at The Engineering and Design Institute, London.
Students were introduced to innovative practices and designed and built their own wind turbines, looking at how they can reduce costs and promote sustainability.
Good universities like Further Maths because it differentiates. Success at it shows students have the ability to understand and apply more difficult concepts, allowing them to discriminate between applicants, many of whom would quite easily gain A or A* in the standard A level.
